When will the needs of primary teachers go VIRAL?

PokemonSo . . . we’ve all seen the incredible impact of “Pokémon Go” in the past few weeks. It’s TRULY gone viral!

And we’re probably all familiar with that “Grumpy Cat” video on YouTube. Yep, another media success that’s gone viral.

And who can forget the image of that beautiful dog skateboarding at full speed, with full, precise control of his vehicle. Incredible. Viral!

So . . . why, on earth, isn’t that all-important “vehicle” that impacts so greatly on the students we teach — the curriculum — going viral?

Surely, it’s a motherhood statement, along with apple pie and cream. Surely we are all agreed that students should be given every chance to achieve success at whatever level of which they are capable.

Surely we should ALL be concerned when “the system” is actually PREVENTING students from, not only succeeding in learning up to their capacity, but also, preventing them from ENJOYING IT!

Two days ago, I purchased a book that set me thinking, yet again, along these lines. Titled “Beautiful Failures”, by author Lucy Clark, the back-cover blurb gives an genuine insight into the content. She begins, “I want to tell you a story about my daughter, my beautiful failure.”

POW!

And don’t we teachers know exactly what she’s talking about!?

I do!

Students sit before me who hate being at school, who couldn’t care less about what they’re supposed to be learning, whose minds are elsewhere (Pokémon, perhaps?), while I, the teacher, try in numerous ways to “win them over” to what we teachers are supposed to be doing — teach!

We need curricula to go VIRAL. Curricula that is interest-packed, relevant, worthwhile, practical in an age of technology that seems to add confusion and difficulty, when SIMPLICITY has a whole lot going for it.

But there are heaps of other truly worthwhile teaching resources available, many of them free, some of them costing but a little. But are teachers encouraged to use them? Are you?

So, let’s hope that curriculum will become the next VIRAL matter.

Sometimes Primary-age students just need something to make them LOVE maths . . . and here it is!

Yep! Some kids HATE maths.

No surprise there!

Every primary teacher has seen it! THAT LOOK that covers the face when it’s Maths Time!

When Maths Skills and Reading Skills Collide

What a shame!

Too many of our students are perfectly capable of “doing” maths.

But they can’t!

Why?

Because they can’t read the worded problems.

It’s a READING skill they lack, not a maths skill!

So, what are we teachers meant to do about THAT?

Practise. Practise. Practise!

Develop a “maths reading vocab” that will stand them in good stead.

AND, have them solving maths problems THAT CHILDREN HAVE A NATURAL INTEREST IN!

AND, have them solving maths problems at a level appropriate to their reading and maths skill levels.

EVERYONE likes to succeed!

So, let’s give our students the very tools that will help them succeed RIGHT NOW, as well as build a solid foundation for the future.

Such materials DO exist!

Take THIS WEEK’S Worksheets, for example! They include problems on the Winter Solstice in Australia (June 21st), runner Ron Clarke’s record-breaking run, the new children’s holiday movie “Inside out,” and loads more.

Some of them are RIGHT HERE — all you need to do is ASK!

Hands Up if you think that “Hands Up” is an Offensive Classroom Practice!

Sometimes the sheer STUPIDITY of an idea seems totally incredible!

Hands up if you agree!

Oh, dear, some of you haven’t raised your hands.

Are you uncertain of the answer? Are you anxious about it? Is it inducing depression?

Apparently so!

The latest deep and meaningful idea to hit the world of education suggests irreparable damage to the psyche of students by sheer public humiliation. How? By asking students who KNOW the answer to NOT put their hands up, so that those who DON’T know the answer don’t feel like second-rate classroom citizens.

Is THIS what we’ve come to?

How very pathetic!

What an insult to teachers Australia-wide!

Teachers, you see, are clever people. Perceptive people. Sensitive people. They understand the students in their classroom. They know when to push for an answer, when to glide around a student to avoid embarrassment, when to push and push and push to challenge a student to extend himself or herself.

Teachers, I repeat, are clever people.

Let’s give them the ENORMOUS credit that they deserve.
